FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: II

Q: I sent my written application form to the USA IBC office some time ago, but I have not yet received the Round I repertoire or rehearsal music CD. When should I expect them?

A. All Competitor Application: Part II packets have been sent via US Mail. Packets contain the Round I classical repertoire, rehearsal music CD, and application forms for you, your coach, and your non-competing partner (if necessary). If you have not received your packet, please let us know. In Round I, Junior competitors must choose from Junior Division Repertoire, and Senior competitors must choose from the Senior Division Repertoire. Couples comprised of one Junior Division competitor and one Senior Division competitor must choose from the Junior Division Repertoire. Check your packet to confirm that you have the correct repertoire and rehearsal music CD.

Q: Is the Competitor Application Form: Part II available online?

A. Yes, go to http://www.usaibc.com/compete/competitors/forms. Applicants will still need to submit a hard copy of their form to the IBC office by February 1, 2010, but this download allows you to edit your responses in Word instead of typing on typewriter or handwriting.

Q: I am a US citizen, and I do not hold a passport. What documentation should I submit with my application?

A. If you are a US citizen without a passport, submit a copy of your birth certificate with your video application (DVD) and documents by February 1, 2010.

Q: Do I have to perform the same variations/pas de deux on the video application (DVD) as I do in Round I of competition?

A. While we recommend that you perform the same variations/pas de deux for Round I that you use for your video application (DVD), it is not necessary. Our hope is that you and your coach will choose the Round I work(s) that best suits you, and begin the process of polishing these pieces for the video application.

Q: I notice that for Round II and Round III contemporary works I should choose from the repertoire of music included in the ASCAP catalog or BMI catalog. Where can I find an online database of the ASCAP and BMI catalogs?

A. ASCAP, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and BMI, Broadcast Music, Inc. are United States Performing Rights Organizations (PROs).Because the USA IBC has a license from both ASCAP and BMI, competitors using music within their repertoire of music will not need to seek written permission for use of their music or pay fees/royalties for the use of the music.
To search ASCAP’s database, use this link: http://www.ascap.com/ace/
To search BMI’s database, use this link: http://repertoire.bmi.com/startpage.asp

Q: I have searched both the ASCAP and BMI databases, but the music for my contemporary piece is not included. How should I proceed?

A. If you are sure that your music is not included in either the ASCAP or BMI databases, then you will need to obtain written permission from the publisher or record company of the CD. Written permissions for Round II and Round III music are due to the IBC office by April 15, 2010. Copyright laws in the United States are very strict concerning the use of music. To avoid the process of securing your own music permissions, we recommend that you choose music from either the ASCAP or BMI databases.

Q: I won a gold medal with my small group ensemble at the New York finals of YAGP. Must I submit a video application (DVD) to the USA IBC by February 1st?

A. Yes, a video application (DVD) is necessary for applicants who won a medal with an ensemble. The USA IBC scores all competitors as individuals. For this reason, medals shared with a partner or ensemble will not exempt applicants from the selection process.

Q: Where can I purchase blank mini discs, and how can I have mini discs made for my contemporary pieces?

A. Blank mini disc are available for purchase with many audio/visual retailers. Here is a link to one retailer, http://www.jr.com/sony/pe/SON_MDW80_SL_5PK/.
